MADARIPUR, Oct 11: Two more ferryboats on the Kawrakandi-Mawa route became out of order raising the total number of inoperative ferries to eight.
A huge number of vehicles, with thousands of passengers, were stranded on both sides of the Padma river as the ferries - Thobal and Taplo - ceased to function at around 5am Monday.
"Only five ferries out of 13 are currently vehicles," Shahnewaz Chowdhury, assistant manager (Kawrakandi zone) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), told The FE.
The engines of the ferries are not functioning as those have become old have been sent to Mawa dockyard for repair, Chowdhury added.
About 400 loaded trucks are waiting for crossing the river everyday for hours over the last 15 days.
Moreover, the ferries now require about three extra hours to cross the river as they have to run an additional 25 kilometres, due to decreased navigability and shaol on the river.
