Wednesday, 12 September 2007

Two more teachers and a student of Rajshahi University (RU) were sent to jail after surrendering before a Rajshahi court Tuesday, as they were wanted in connection with the campus turmoil, reports UNB.
The two teachers of Geology and Mining Department - Golam Sabbir Tapu and Chowdhury Sarwar Zahan Sajal - and student Ataur Rahman appeared in the court, as police submitted charge sheets against them for involvement in the August 21-22 violence.
They surrendered before the court of Rajshahi Speedy Trial Judge Fazlul Karim Chowdhury at about noon, and the court sent them to jail.
Matihar police submitted the charge sheets against a total of 19 persons - eight teachers, a public relations officer and 10 students - in two cases involving the burning of a DGFI car and violation of the Emergency Power Rules during the mayhem, a backlash against the Dhaka University incident.
Earlier, six teachers - former vice-chancellor Saidur Rahman Khan, Abdus Sobhan, Moloy Kumar Bhowmik, Dulal Chandra Biswas, Selim Reza Newton and Abdullah Al Mamun - were either arrested or surrendered before the court in the cases.
All the charge-sheeted teachers are now in jail.
RU Public Relations Officer Sadiqul Islam was also arrested on the same charges. Nine more students remained on the run to dodge police dragnet.
