Two more Tathyo Tori launched

Friday, 28 August 2009

Grameenphone (GP) in association with CARE Bangladesh launched its third and fourth Tathyo Tori (Information Boat) at Dhirai in Sunamganj recently.
The Information Boats are designed to provide necessary livelihood information to the riverine communities of Bangladesh and moves from one place to another on a fixed schedule.
The boat will work as an information hub to meet the information and communication needs of rural communities, especially the Char and Haor areas; people of these areas have limited access to up-to-date livelihood and other information due to their remoteness.
Information boats are equipped with digital content, such as livelihood and agricultural information, suited for the specific areas serviced by the boats.
A typical Information Boat will have computers, Internet and email facilities, photocopiers, printers, TV cameras and video machines, scanners, and more, depending on the needs of the community.
The main objective of the project is to break the digital divide by both educating and empowering the rural people with the necessary information for their livelihood.
The project will place specific focus on underprivileged and marginalized people of the community. The boats will also provide primary healthcare services to the community, once in a week with pre-scheduled route plan, which will be communicated in advance to them.
Among others, Deputy Director (Technology) of GP Lutfor Rahman and Deputy General Manager (Corporate Social Responsibility) Debashis Roy and Technical Coordinator of CARE Bangladesh Moshiur Rahman, regional managers Kanika Rani and Sukhen Paul were present at the launching ceremony.
