Two MPs asked to submit academic certificates by May 31

Tuesday, 14 April 2009

The Election Commission (EC) Monday issued letters to two lawmakers of the ninth parliament - Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury of BNP and Jatiya Party Secretary General ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader - asking them to submit their academic certificates by May 31 as they failed to comply with the relevant electoral rule, reports UNB.
While issuing the ultimatum, the EC decided that if the two lawmakers did not submit their academic certificates within the timeframe, it would request the Speaker of parliament to cancel their parliament membership.
"The letter will be sent to the Speaker requesting him to take necessary steps if they (lawmakers) fail to submit their certificates," Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda told reporters in reply to a question at the EC secretariat in the afternoon.
EC sources said BNP leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury did not mention anything in the box for educational qualifications in his affidavit submitted to the Commission for contesting the December 29 parliamentary elections, held under strict rules framed under politico-electoral reforms during the past emergency rule.
But, the sources said, he had promised to submit the certificates 'very soon' when the EC arranged hearings of appeals.
One EC official said JP leader Ruhul Amin Howlader mentioned his academic qualifications as BA (Hons) in Public Administration from the Dhaka University but did not attach any copy of certificate.
