Two new SC judges to be sworn in Sunday

Friday, 6 March 2009

Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Justice M Abdul Aziz, just elevated to the Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court (SC), will be sworn in Sunday (March 8) to fill up long-lying vacancies, reports UNB.

Chief Justice MM Ruhul Amin will administer the oath at 10:30 am at judges' lounge, SC registrar office said.

On Wednesday, President M Zillur Rahman in exercise of his powers under Article 95(1) of the Constitution made the appointments on recommendations from the Judicial Commission, bolstering the highest judiciary to run to its full capacity of seven judges.

The two posts had been lying vacant since July last year.

On October 16 last year, a meeting of the Judicial Commission, headed by Chief Justice (CJ) MM Ruhul Amin, recommended to the President the name of four eligible candidates, two against each vacant post, drawn from the High Court (HC) Division for appointment as Appellate Division judges.

Justice Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman, Justice M Abdul Quddus, Justice M Abdul Aziz and Justice Bijan Kumar Das were on the list.

The nine-member Judicial Commission, headed by the CJ, after scrutiny, recommends names eligible for appointment as judges in both the HC and Appellate Divisions of the SC.

Shah ANM Rahman and MA Aziz booked their berths in the HC bench from the bar on June 1, 1996 and April 27, 1998 respectively.
