Newborn's death
Two physicians of Central Hospital get bail
Doctors resume private practice, surgeries
FE REPORT | Wednesday, 19 July 2023
A Dhaka court on Tuesday granted bail to two physicians of Central Hospital, Shahzadi Mustarshida Sultana and Muna Saha -- in a case filed over the deaths of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi and her newborn at the hospital in the capital.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sultan Sohag Uddin passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by the accused.
Lawyers Md Mizanur Rahman Mamun and Faruque Ahmed appeared in the court hearing representing the doctors.
Lawyer Faruque Ahmed said the bail order will remain valid till submission of the probe report.
The bail order came when doctors at private hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres were observing a two-day strike since Monday demanding the release of two physicians.
Earlier, their bail petitions were rejected by Dhaka's Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court considering the depth of the offences brought against them.
Shahzadi and Muna were produced before the court on June 15 after their arrests in connection with the case.
Later, they gave confessional statements before two separate magistrates. The court then sent them to jail after rejecting their bail petitions.
The newborn of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi died while she was undergoing C-section in the hospital on June 10. Akhi, 25, who was later taken to LabAid Hospital and had been on life support there, died on June 18.
Akhi's husband Yakub Ali filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station on June 14 accusing the doctors concerned and the hospital authorities for the botched C-section.
The accused falsely promised the patient and her family before the procedure that a doctor named Sanjukta Saha was at the hospital, said the complaint.
Meanwhile, according to a report of bdnews24.com on Tuesday afternoon, doctors will now see patients in their chambers and perform surgeries as usual.
The report also adds: Prof ABM Khurshid Alam, head of the Association of Surgeons, announced that physicians would be resuming their private practice after the two central hospital doctors were granted bail.
"We have come to know that two detained doctors have been granted bail. We are withdrawing our programme for the time being," he said on Tuesday.
"Everyone will go back to work. Doctors will see patients at their chambers, and all operations, including surgeries, will continue as usual."
