Two SAF, 12 nat'l records broken

The 23rd Mercantile Bank National Swimming Championship concluded Saturday at National Swimming Complex at Mirpur in the city with two South Asian Federation (SAF) records and 12 national records broken during the four-day meet, UNB reports.
On the medal side, Bangladesh Krira Sikkha Protishtan (BKSP) clinched the top slot securing 16 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronze medals. Bangladesh Army finished second collecting 12 gold, 15 silver and 6 bronze medals while Bangladesh Ansar placed third with 8 golds, 9 silvers and 6 bronzes.
President of Bangladesh Swimming Federation and Chief of Bangladesh Navy Vice Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam witnessed some of the closing day's events and later distributed prizes.
Additional Managing Director of sponsor Mercantile Bank Ltd AKM Shahidul Haque was also present as special guest.
Sonia Akhter and Mahfuzur Rahman, both from BKSP, were adjudged the best female and male swimmers of the meet to receive cash award of Tk 20,000 each while Anik Islam of BKSP and Nazma Khatun of Kushtia DSA were named the best promising swimmers to earn cash award of Tk 10,000 each.
Four more new national marks were achieved in 10 events decided on 4th and last day.
BKSP swimmer Mahfzur Rahman made the day's first record in the men's 100-metre freestyle clocking 54.22 seconds to better his previous 54.48 seconds.
Jahangir Alam of Bangladesh Army created national record in the men's 200-metre breaststroke finishing in 2:27.11 to improve on old record of 2:27.87 of Karar Samedul Islam.
Army Swimming team, comprising Washiul, Shahjahan, Kamal and Rezaul, set up new national marks in the men's 4x100-metre medley relay clocking 4:08.99 to better old record of 4:10.10.
Bangladesh Ansar swimming team, that included Sabura, Mahfuza, Laboni and Doly, made new national record in the women's 4x100 medley relay finishing in 5:10.20 and breaking previous record of 5:18.97.
