Two SCAB factions take dissenting stand over movement

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 17 July 2024

Two factions of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) have taken a dissenting stance on the quota reform movement.
Two factions, led by its President and Secretary, presented their positions on Tuesday in the SCBA auditorium.
During a briefing, a faction of the lawyers' body led by President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan said that holding processions is a fundamental right guaranteed under the constitution.
The SCBA President further stated, "The brutal attack by Chhatra League members and other pro-Awami League organisations on the peaceful movement of the quota reformists is a clear violation of constitutional rights. We urge the government to stop this brutal attack on the students."
He also demanded the government's immediate resignation for its failure to arrest the armed cadres who attacked the quota reformists.
The government is trying to bypass the issue by claiming it's a sub-judice matter, he said.
'However, my question is, who first talked about this sub-judice matter? The Prime Minister herself first mentioned it. She declared herself in favor of the quota. She made contemptuous comments about a sub-judice matter. We hope the court will issue a Suo Motu rule regarding the issue," he further said
In a separate briefing, SCBA Secretary Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque said that the agitating students are continuing their movement inspired by different vested interests.
He further stated, "They (agitators) are demanding the passage of a law in Parliament which is totally unrealistic."
The protesters chanted slogans that are against the spirit of our independence and sovereignty, he said adding they also insulted the Prime Minister using vulgar language.
"They even referred to themselves as 'Razakar' (a term for collaborators in Bangladesh) while chanting slogans. Our hearts bled upon hearing this word 'Razakar'" he said
