Thursday, 13 March 2008

NARAYANGANJ, Mar 12 (UNB): Four persons, including two siblings, were Wednesday sentenced to death for the double-murder of mother and daughter in Deobhog area under Fatulla thana.
Five others, including father and sister of the two brothers sentenced to death, were also jailed for life for the sensational murders following family feuds.
Those who are to walk to the gallows are Kamal Hossain, 34, son of Nurul Huq of the area, his brother Mohiuddin Ahmad Chanchal, 30, their brother-in-law Anwar Hossain Anu, 46, and contract killer Ataur Rahman alias Ata, 45.
The lifers are Nurul Huq, 70, his daughter Nurunnahar Runa, 35, and contract killers Joj Mia, 32, Mukter Hossain, 35, and Afzal Hossain, 36.
District and Sessions Judge Abdul Kuddus Mia delivered the verdict in a crowded court in the sensational murder case of Manwara Begum and her daughter Razia Sultana Munni.
All the nine convicts were in the dock-and they broke down in tears as the judge pronounced the sentences.
Examining the records and 25 witnesses the judge acquitted one of the accused, Nurul Huq's wife Lutfa Begum, 60, of the charge.
According to the prosecution, Nurul Huq, as per an evil intent to grab the property of his late brother Abdur Razzak Bepari, hired Ataur Rahman, Mukter Hossain and Afzal Hossain in February 2006 for Tk 2 lakh to kill Razzak's wife Manwara Begum, daughter Razia Sultana Munni and son Shantu.
Later, as per their previous plan, Nurunnahar Runa knocked on the door of the widow's house on June 27. Hearing the call, Manwara opened the door.
Soon, Kamal, Chanchal and Anwar Hossain along with the three assassins stormed into the room and tied up Manwara and Munni. And the miscreants brutally slaughtered the mother and daughter.
However, Shantu, after his SSC exam, had gone to visit his aunt's house in the morning that day and thus had been luckily saved.
Police recovered the two slaughtered bodies the following morning when local people called them, sensing something wrong.
The cunning Nurul Huq filed a robbery case with the local police station on the day against six local youths to conceal the fact.
Police at one stage of the investigation handed over the charge of the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Investing the case, the plainclothes police arrested Ataur Rahman Ata. Later, as per his confessional statement, the CID men broke the case and arrested the rest.
