Two small rental power plants go into operation
FE Report | Sunday, 3 August 2008
Two small rental power plants (SRPP) have gone into commercial operation supplying about 90 megawatt (MW) of electricity to national grid.
These are among six such plants under private sector approved by the government early this year.
The renal power units are Energy Prima's Kumargaon 50 MW unit in Sylhet and Khulna 40MW power unit of Agrico International, sources said.
Another SRPP Shahajibazar 50 MW power unit is expected to go into commercial production by the third week of this month, they mentioned.
Although the Shahajibazar unit was to produce electricity in July, a clash that took place between the project contractors and Ansar men delayed the launching process, sources said.
On the other hand, two other rental power projects namely the Fenchuganj 50MW unit and Bogra 20MW unit will require more than a month to launch their operation, informed sources said.
According to official sources, the Kumargaon rental-power unit sold more than 24.16-million kilowatt of electricity to the state-run Power Development Board (PDB) until July 30.
Currently, the 50MW Kumargaon unit is generating electricity to its full capacity, according to sources.
Although, the Khulna 40 MW power unit went into production a few weeks back, it is yet to supply electricity at the expected level due to some technical problems, they mentioned.
Sources, however, said the Shahjibazar and Fenchuganj rental power units could not go into production in time primarily because of an inordinate delay in allocation of lands for the projects by the authorities concerned.
On January 15 last, the PDB signed contracts with six rental power units, having a total power generation capacity of 220MW.
As per the contracts, the rental plants were to go into operation within 120 days from the day of signing of the agreement.
