Two state-owned gas giants will start ascertaining the actual reserve of gas and further dispersion of it in their five major operative gas fields in December this year aiming to augment the production, officials said Tuesday.
The Bangladesh Gas Field Company Ltd. (BGFCL) will ascertain the actual reserves and further dispersion of gas at its Titas and Bakhrabad fields. The Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd (SGFL) will also follow the suit at its Koilastila, Rashidpur and Sylhet (Haripur) fields, a senior Petrobangla official told the FE.
The country's lone gas exploration company-Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd. (BAPEX)- will conduct a three-dimensional (3-D) seismic survey as a contractor of the two companies.
"BGFCL and SGFL have taken the schemes to ascertain the remaining reserve of gas in the five major gas fields and identify the further dispersion of gas. It will help the government have a clear idea about the total extractable reserve of gas in those fields," BAPEX managing director M Imaduddin told the FE.
He said: "First, we'll start a 3-D seismic survey at the Bakhrabad gas field of the BGFCL in December. We expect the gas reserve and the assessment of its further dispersion will be completed in the May-June period of 2009."
"By June 2011 we will be able to ascertain the real remaining reserve and its dispersion in all the five gas fields. It will help the government work out an energy supply plan for the next couple of decades," he added.
The five operative gas fields are contributing about 35 per cent to the total 1,785 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) supplied to the consumers in the country.
According to the state-owned Petrobangla, Titas is the largest field in the country with its total recoverable reserve of 5.13 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas followed by Habiganj with 3.85 TCF, Bibiyana 2.4 TCF, Kailastila 1.9 TCF, Rashidpur 1.4 TCF, Bakhrabad 1.05 TCF and Sylhet gas field 487.7 billion cubic feet (BCF).
The remaining recoverable reserve at the Titas field has stood at 2.35 TCF, Habiganj 2.4 TCF, Bibiyana 2.31 TCF, Kailastila 1.5 TCF, Rashidpur 980 BCF, Bakhrabad 375.4 BCF and Sylhet (Haripur) gas field 292.6 BCF.
"As the reserves of gas in the five gas fields were ascertained many years ago, now we want to re-ascertain the reserves and dispersion of gas in those fields," an official said.
He said in view of the country's growing demand they need to rethink again about the present reserve and the future energy security, which prompted them to ascertain the gas reserves in the major state-owned fields with funding from the ADB.
