Two textile mills fined Tk 5.0m in anti-pollution drive

CHITTAGONG, May 22: Two textile mills in Kalurghat heavy industrial area in the city have been fined Tk five million on charges of polluting the Karnafuli river water through discharging industrial waste. Director of Environment (enforcement and monitoring) Magistrate Munir Chowdhury today fined the industries during anti-pollution drive. Munir inspected the Sanji Textiles Ltd this afternoon and found that the industry was discharging liquid waste which was drained into the river in spite of having its waste desposal facilities. He warned the industry against further waste disposal in future and charged Tk 2.284 million as fine. Magistrate Munir later inspected the Shah Amanat Textile Mills in the industrial area and found no effluent treatment plant (ETP) for which he fined it Tk 2.8 million. He instructed the industry management to install effluent treatment plant within one month failing which gas, power and water connections will be snapped, he warned.
