Two men have been apprehended in Mymensingh on war crimes charges hours after Bangladesh’s first war crimes tribunal ordered their arrest, police say. Phulbarhia Police Station OC Rifaat Khan Rajib said the tribunal ordered arrest of Amjad Ali, Riazuddin Fakir, and Waz Uddin on Tuesday. Ali was arrested in Phulbarhia Upazila’s Keshorganj and Fakir in Bhalukganj in the afternoon. The third one is on the run. Moinul Haq, Mymensingh Superintendent of Police, said the two would be produced before court on Wednesday. Prosecutor Hrishikesh Saha said investigation against them for war crimes charges was going on for about a year. He said they had moved the tribunal for the arrest of the three. They will be handed over to the interrogation cell of the tribunal, the OC said. An estimated three million people were killed and millions of others were forced to seek refuge in India during the nine-month Liberation War in 1971, according to a news agency.
