UAE compensates 879 camel jockeys

The UAE government has offered US$1.5 million in compensation to help rehabilitate as many as 879 children used as camel jockeys in the Gulf nation, the Home Ministry said.
In a statement, the ministry said the amount would be given to 879 children.
A high-powered team lead by Lt Col. Ibrahim Al Marjuki said this while calling on Home Minister Advacate Shahara Khatun at her office.
The UAE government launched a compensation programme for the affected children who worked a camel Jockey there.
Under the programme they also decide to compensate Bangladeshi children.
In this regard Bangladesh formed a three-member committee, with a joint secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs as its convener and deputy secretary as a member. The other member was inducted from the UAE government.
The committee visited 29 districts and took application from the affected children.
A total of 906 applications were received and after scrutiny, the committee has decided to pay compensation for 889 children.
After thorough scrutiny the committee recommended 879 applications as valid.
A total of $1.435 million in cheque was distributed among the valid applicants.
Each victim will receive between $1000 and $ 10000 in compensation under the programme.
