ABU DHABI, July 18 (Xinhua): A senior official of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) said the government is considering the introduction of an anti- tobacco law to prevent smoking from spreading in the country, local newspaper Khaleej Times reported yesterday.
A draft bill on smoking is being deliberated at the UAE Ministerial Council, according to the report.
"The UAE is very much committed towards implementing a comprehensive anti-tobacco law to reduce the spread of the habit in the society, especially between children and adolescent," Ali bin Shukur, Under-secretary of the Ministry of Health, was quoted as saying.
Consumption and promotion of tobacco products will be restricted if such a law is implemented. Selling tobacco to minors and exposure of young people to environmental tobacco smoking will also be banned.
The enforcement of the anti-tobacco law will greatly help in curbing smoking, urging public and private institutions to exert more efforts in this regard, Shukur said.
