State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Hasan Mahmud has sought cooperation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a leading employer of Bangladeshi workers, for retaining the existing labourers as well as more recruitment from Bangladesh, reports UNB.
The State Minister made the request when he called on UAE Labour Minister Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash in Abu Dhabi Sunday, according to a message received in Dhaka.
During the meeting, the two ministers discussed the entire issue relating to Bangladeshi workers in the UAE.
They also exchanged views on how best to address the challenges of the ongoing economic meltdown including easing the procedure for change of residency visa, online access for visa verification to avoid visa forgery and extension of time after expiry of job contracts.
The State Minister then met his UAE counterpart Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
They discussed bilateral matters including trade, investment and Bangladeshi workers working in the Gulf country.
Dr Mahmud briefed his counterpart about the programmes and policies of the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
They also discussed ways of strengthening the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.
Bangladesh Ambassador to UAE Nazmul Quaunine, Consul General Abdul Hye and Labour Counselor Muniruzzaman were present at both the meetings.
The State Minister requested for more UAE investment in Bangladesh in energy, refinery and other areas of infrastructure.
Dr Hasan Mahmud also attended the National Day reception hosted by the Bangladesh Ambassador at Hotel Hilton as special guest and met the ministers, high dignitaries and cross section of Bangladeshi people living in the UAE.
Bangabandhu Parishad in the UAE also accorded a reception to Dr Hasan Mahmud Saturday evening at a local hotel where he urged the Parishad members and other attending Bangladesh community members to work for the country and help establish Bangladeshi expatriates in the UAE as a disciplined and law abiding community.
