ABU DHABI, Aug 30 (Xinhua): Etisalat, the telecom giant of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced yesterday that it has launched GSM service in Afghanistan, Emirates News Agency reported.
The GSM service of Etisalat's Afghanistan division is now available in Kabul, Herat, Mazar-i-Sherif, Kunduz and Jalalabad, according to the report.
Other areas, including Kandahar, Ghazni, Poli Khumri, Baghlan and Paghman, will be covered by the company before this year's Muslim fasting month of Ramadan beginning on Sept. 13.
"Today is an important day for Etisalat as we extend the number of our operational markets to fourteen countries and export the Etisalat brand into our third market," Etisalat Chairman Mohammad Hassan Omran was quoted as saying.
"Our investment in Afghanistan is for the long term, which is the reason we bring to the country our values of openness, caring both for our customers and staff, and innovation that come with it, " he added.
Etisalat will offer a wide range of services including GPRS and MMS services, ring back tones, missed call notification and a discounted "family and friends" package.
As the third largest Arab telecom provider by market value, Etisalat now manages 14 service providers in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. Its services currently reach more than 32 million subscribers.
