Uber car ride-sharing allowed

FE Report | Thursday, 8 April 2021

The government has allowed ride sharing entity Uber's car services amid Covid-19 restrictions.
Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Wednesday permitted the service as Uber applied for the permission.
"In accordance with directives from the government of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), we have resumed car services, such as UberX, Premier and Rental," Uber said in a statement.
"We believe this will facilitate access to safer and reliable mobility options for riders in these challenging times," the statement said.
However, use of motorcycles under ride-sharing service remains suspended.
Keeping in mind the rising Covid-19 infection rates, the BRTA earlier banned operation of motorcycles under ride-sharing services to ensure health safety guidelines and physical distancing.
Meanwhile, since the beginning of the Covid-19 restrictions on Monday, ride sharing bikers continued to stage demonstration across the city.
Motorcyclists operating their vehicles under ride-sharing services blocked a road near Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters on Wednesday, demanding continuation of their services during the weeklong restriction on public movement and transports.
The bikers also demonstrated in front of Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on the day, protesting cases filed against them for operating amid the government's restrictions.
