UCCM to be made mandatory at UPS

The government has decided to make the Union Coordination Committee Meeting (UCCM) mandatory for all unions under 'Union Parishad Act 2009' with a view to ensuring sustainable rural development through people’s participation and good governance, reports BSS.
"We will tell the UPs that they would not be eligible for getting fund from Local Government Support Project (LGSP) unless they introduce UCCM at their unions," Local Government Division (LGD) Secretary Abu Alam M Shahid Khan said at a workshop Monday.
UCCM is a monthly forum where all service providers report their activities of the previous month and prepare plans for the next month in consultation with local government and people's representatives.
LGD, National Institute of Local Government (NILG), Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB), Japan International cooperation Agency (JICA) and Water and Sanitation Programme of the World Bank jointly organised the workshop on "Horizontal Learning Programme Thematic Workshop on UCCM' at NILG auditorium at Agargaon in the city.
Chief representative of JICA Bangladesh Dr Takao Toda present on the occasion as the Guest of Honour, while Director General of BRDB M Huymayun Khalid and additional secretary of LGD Syed Mahbub Hasan attended as the special guests.
Director General of NILG Kabir M Ashraf Alam presided over the workshop.
Senior Decentralisation Specialist of World Bank (WB) Santanu Lahiri and Rural Development Advisor of JICA Hiroki Watanabe were also present on the occasion.
