Ugandan coffee export heats up

Tuesday, 7 December 2010

KAMPALA, dec 6 (Commodity Online): Owing to good harvest of high yielding crops Uganda's coffee exports rose to 267,506 60-kg bags in November from 235,171 bags in the same month last year, state-run Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said.
As the second largest coffee producer in the east African economy, coffee is the chief source of foreign exchange income and employment.
"The coffee that is being harvested around now matured in very good weather, so the yield was good and that's why we're seeing a surge in the volume of exports," the UCDA official said.
Cherry harvests are underway in eastern and central Uganda, which received heavy rains earlier this year when the crop was in its early stages.
The two regions account for 55 per cent of Uganda's annual coffee yield while south and western Uganda contributes the remainder.
