UGC asked to strengthen monitoring to ensure quality higher edn

President M Zillur Rahman has laid emphasis on ensuring quality higher education at minimum cost especially at private universities. The President made the observation when newly appointed chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof AK Azad Chowdhury called on him at Bangabhaban in the city Sunday, reports UNB. President Rahman also asked the UGC chairman to strengthen its monitoring over all public and private universities to ensure the standard of higher education. He said some private universities are taking a lot of money as admission and tuition fees and asked the UGC to take measures to check the practices of the private universities. The UGC chairman proposed to rename the UGC as Commission for Higher Education and sought the President's support and cooperation. Earlier, a delegation from the Commonwealth Society of Bangladesh (CSB), led by its President Inam Ahmed Chowdhury, called on the President at Bangabhaban. CSB vice-president Maj Gen (Retd) KM Shafiullah and secretary general AJM Enamul Islam were in the delegation. The CSB, a non-political organisation, has been working in the country for alleviating poverty, establishing sustainable democracy and also continuing welfare activities. The President lauded the activities of the society and assured all support in this respect.
