UGC to ensure free Wi-Fi facilities in universities
FE REPORT | Thursday, 26 March 2026
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to instruct all public and private universities across the country to take necessary initiatives to ensure free Wi-Fi access as soon as possible.
According to the UGC, the process of issuing official instructions is now in its final stage.
At a recent meeting, the commission made an initial decision to direct university authorities to provide free Wi-Fi facilities in libraries, common rooms, and cafeterias within the next 60 working days.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at the UGC office, chaired by UGC Chairman Mamun Ahmed.
This initiative has been undertaken as part of the current government's election manifesto, aiming to expand digital facilities in the education sector, support students in education and research, and reduce digital inequality through the introduction of free Wi-Fi services.
The Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BDREN) will assist in implementing the initiative. During the meeting, it was also noted that the facility will be expanded in phases to cover other educational and research infrastructure, including university residential halls.
At the meeting, the UGC Chairman provided necessary guidance to officials from the UGC, the HIT Project, and BDREN to develop a student-friendly digital infrastructure in the country's higher education institutions.
