NETRAKONA, Apr 04: The poor and ultra poor people of Mohanganj upazila in Netrakona district have found the way of becoming self-reliant by following the slogan "saving in good times helps in hard times."
The poor of the area have become members of Ujjal Mohanganj Social Welfare committee and are following its rules and regulations. There was an uncertainty among the people at the initial level, but it has now drawn an immense response in the area.
Fishermen, landless people, poor and ultrapoor people including freedom fighters, school teachers, and a large number of people are rushing to become the member of Ujjal Mohanganj.
Ujjal Mohanganj was founded by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kazi Abed Hussain.
The poor people will deposit in good times by forming small co-operatives and that money will be disbursed to them as loan. The loanees need not continue to deposit instalments in hard times. There is no fixed interest rate.
Each member is committed to avoiding early marriage and taking dowry. They are stopping the dropout of their children from school; they plant trees, use green manure and adopt family planning.
They will lose their membership if they do not construct sanitary latrines. They shun addiction. In every month all members gather in Upazila premises. They are accountable to the UNO in obeying different government directives for development of the country.
