Monday, 3 September 2007

A British-assisted seminar began in the city Sunday aiming to improve Bangladesh's border-security issues and encourage sensitive policy responses to offences like international terrorism and trafficking, reports UNB
The British Ministry of Defence and Bangladesh Ministry of Home Affairs are jointly holding the four-day seminar titled 'Improving Bangladesh's Border Security and Management' at Radius conference centre.
A British HC release said the seminar aimed at enhancing awareness of the range and nature of border-security issues that concern Bangladesh and to encourage sensitive and coordinated policy responses, including countering terrorism, managing border policing and tackling international crime like trafficking in drugs, persons and arms.
The seminar brings together senior delegates from key border-management agencies in Bangladesh, including police, immigration, customs, coastguard, navy and Bangladesh Rifles, with UK delegates from the British Army, police and customs and draws on the UK's experience of dealing with border-security issues, including through inter-agency cooperation.
British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury, who attended the seminar, said: "There is a common interest in securing regional peace and stability. We have expressed our shared commitment with Bangladesh to fight terrorism and to tackle the harmful effects of international crime.
"We are, therefore, delighted at the opportunity for UK-Bangladesh cooperation and look to strengthen it further in future," said the Bangladesh-origin British diplomat.
