British High Commissioner Stephen Evans Thursday said his country's businessmen are eager to invest in Bangladesh's thriving telecommunication sector, reports UNB.

The British envoy said this during a meeting with Special Assistant to Chief Adviser on Post and Telecommunications Ministry Brigadier General (rtd) MA Malek at the Latter's office in the city.

Evans expressed the hope that the mutual relations of UK and Bangladesh would improve day by day during his tenure. He assured continued cooperation of his government in the development activities of Bangladesh.

According to the website of Department for International Development (DFID), the British government has invested over 350 million pound during the last three years for the economic progress of Bangladesh.

The Special Assistant said, 'The government will welcome any foreign partnership for expanding simple and easy communications technology for grassroots people.'

FE Report adds-According to a report of Asian Development Bank (ADB), mobile telecommunications have been the major area of foreign direct investment in Bangladesh. Cumulative investments in this area is set to exceed Tk238 billion or $3.4 billion in FY2008.

The industry directly employs more than 15,000 and indirectly creates jobs for 650,000.

Collaboration with multinational companies with broader exposure has helped the industry bring more modern technologies and business management expertise. This has translated into reasonably good quality service and robust turnover.

The ADB report said the telecommunications sector in Bangladesh is undergoing rapid structural change and dramatic economic growth. The national monopoly, which dominated the industry, is now facing increasing competition from the private sector. Under the stimulus of an open market and changing technologies, new services are constantly being developed.
