Wednesday, 26 March 2014
British minister of state for international development Alan Duncan is due in Dhaka on Mar 31.Officials at the foreign minister said he would come ahead of the first anniversary of the Rana Plaza building collapse that killed more than 1,100 people and injured many on Apr 24 last year. The worst-ever building collapse in Bangladesh evoked worldwide concern for labour safety and working conditions in its ready-made garment factories, the country's main export sector. Duncan had met survivors and families of the dead in June last year, promising UK aid amounting to $27 million to improve factory working condition and arrange workers' training for skill development. He had also spoken against suggestion by garment buyers to ban Bangladesh after the collapse, saying the idea was “utterly irresponsible”, according to bdnews24.com.
