UK to recruit more skilled migrants from Bangladesh

Thursday, 13 November 2008

FE Report
Under its newly introduced 'Points Based System' for migration, the United Kingdom (UK) will recruit more skilled migrants from Bangladesh in line with the country's current economic needs.
This newly initiated points based scheme and the Tier 2 of which will come into effect from November 27 along with the shortage occupation list published by the UK government on November 11, would regulate the migration of skilled workers with job offer in Great Britain; replacing the current UK Work Permits scheme.
"This global policy of points-based evaluation, which will be applicable to all countries of the world apart from the members of the European Union, is aimed at matching the flow of migration to the UK to its economic needs," Head of Immigration at the British High Commission in Dhaka Stuart Percival said at a press conference in the city Wednesday.
The final listing of the shortage occupations, a complete version of which will be available at www.ukba.gov.uk, includes consultant doctors, dentists and senior nurses in certain healthcare specialties, some engineering occupations, secondary school teachers in mathematics and science as well as skilled chefs and skilled senior care workers.
Any individual applying as a Tier 2 skilled worker will be required to score 70 points from three sets of criteria based on Attributes (sponsorship, qualifications, and future earnings- 50 points), Maintenance (ability to support himself/herself and any dependants- 10 points) and English Language Ability (10 points).
