The British High Commission and the US embassy have stressed that former prime minister Khaleda Zia, arrested Monday in a corruption case, must be guaranteed 'due process' and 'fair treatment', report UNB/ bdnews24.com.
The British High Commission in Dhaka in a statement released Monday said: "We are aware that former prime minister Khaleda Zia has been arrested. We call upon the caretaker government to ensure that due process is followed and the rule of law upheld."
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Dhaka said all arrested individuals should be treated fairly and receive the full range of their legal and constitutional rights.
The Embassy made the remarks responding to the arrest of ex-prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her younger son Arafat Rahman.
"The US Embassy in Dhaka is aware that former prime minister Khaleda Zia has been arrested," a spokesperson for the Embassy said.
"The Embassy is following all cases to see if they meet international standards of due process," the spokesperson added.
