ULF to boycott CJ's felicitation Oct 08

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 4 October 2023

United Lawyers Front (ULF), a platform of anti-government lawyers, on Tuesday said Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan committed an unprecedented event in the Supreme Court's history of 52 years by receiving greetings from the Awami League's student wing.
The organisation made the statement at a press conference convened at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) building.
In a written statement, ULF central convener advocate Zainul Abedin said the new Chief Justice received floral greetings from the central president and secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) amid wider media coverage.
"It's an unprecedented event in the Supreme Court's 52 years of history and, according to senior lawyers, a moment of extreme pain for the judiciary," he added.
The felicitations and various speeches before the commencement of official duties have called into question the highest constitutional judicial post like the Chief Justice, reads the statement.
"A reception was held in honour of the Chief Justice at the Netrakona Stadium on October 01. Netrakona district Awami League vice-president chaired the programme."
The meeting was attended by a state minister of the government, members of parliament, judges, local bureaucrats and police officials and workers of the district unit Awami League and its affiliates.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan lost dignity and honour of an impartial position by accepting a reception hosted by the ruling Awami League, said Mr Abedin.
Ordinary people's distrust is writ large on the judiciary, according to him.
