Ultimatum to resolve accommodation crisis at DU

DU Correspondent | Wednesday, 2 October 2019

Dhaka University (DU) students on Tuesday gave the university authorities an ultimatum to resolve the longstanding accommodation crisis in the residential halls within 15 days.
Students of various departments, mostly first- and second-year students, issued the ultimatum from a rally held at the base of Raju Sculpture close to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on the campus.
Tanvir Hasan Saikat, a member of DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU), expressed solidarity with them. He has already been staying with the first-year students at the Kabi Jasim Uddin Hall's Gonoroom (a common room where many students reside together), leaving the comfort of his own residential seat.
At the rally, Tanvir threatened that the students would take shelter at the residence of the Du Vice-Chancellor if he fails to solve the accommodation crisis within 15 days.
The university should enroll new students after resolving the accommodation crisis, he said, adding: "If they fail to resolve the crisis, how they would make proper arrangements for newcomers?"
"An environment conducive to study and a right place to sleep in should be ensured first," the DUCSU member added.
He also announced that he would continue to stay at the Gonoroom until the university authorities provide legal seats for first-year students.
