UN Assembly passes BD proposal

Wednesday, 17 December 2014

The General Assembly of the United Nations in a unanimous resolution has passed a Bangladesh proposal for ‘culture of peace,’ a press release of the foreign ministry has said. Bangladesh was one of 97 countries to co-sponsor the resolution. In an impromptu response, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr A K Abdul Momen said that the main spirit of the resolution was to increase tolerance which would reduce global tensions. This is the first time a number of European countries came forward to co-sponsor the resolution. Momen said that the main theme of the resolution was the participation of people, particularly women and youth, in running the state. The diplomat said that despite the negative propaganda by certain quarters the adoption of the resolution, once again, proved that the global community accepted Bangladesh as a responsible partner. Earlier in 1999, a similar resolution by Bangladesh was passed by the UN for a ‘decade of peace of culture.’ Since 2001, Bangladesh has been raising the issue every year and it was always accepted unanimously. The UN General Assembly passed the Bangladesh proposal on Monday night (New York time), according to a news agency.
