United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has paid high tributes to Begum Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh's former prime minister and one of its most influential political figures, recalling her role in democratic dispensation.
The UN chief executive has written to Bangladesh's chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to express his condolences over Zia's passing, the CA Office said Wednesday.
In the letter, António Guterres said he was "saddened to learn of the passing of Her Excellency Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh".
He also conveyed sympathy on behalf of the United Nations to the people of Bangladesh and to Zia's bereaved family.
"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of Bangladesh and to her family," Guterres writes, acknowledging her historic role in the country's political life.
He recalls that she had held "a distinguished place in the political history of the nation", noting that her legacy was shaped by "many years of public service and leadership".
