UN peacekeepers \\\'bring honour for BD\\\'

CHITTAGONG, May 29: The UN peacekeepers from Bangladesh have brought honour and prestige for the country through their contribution to the world peace missions for the last 26 years.
The Bangladeshi peacekeepers have been acclaimed for their efforts in keeping peace in as many as 16 countries of the world and have earned great respect for the country, said Major General Sabbir Ahmed, Area Commander of 24 Infantry Division and GOC (General Officer Commanding) of Chittagong.
He was addressing the inauguration ceremony of the UN Peacekeepers Run at the gymnasium of MA Aziz Stadium on the occasion of International Day of UN Peacekeepers Thursday morning.
The UN Peacekeepers Run is organised every year in Dhaka but the Area Headquarters, Chittagong, observed the day in the port city also for the first time this year, he said.
General Ahmed said the UN and rest of the world have praised missions of peacekeeping forces of Bangladesh as it performs its duty with great reputation. Besides, the forces have contributed a lot to the national economy through earnings of foreign exchange, he added.
Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation Md Manzur Alam inaugurated the UN Peacekeepers Rally by releasing balloons. The colourful rally paraded through Naval Avenue, Kazir Dewri Nur Ahmed Road and Circuit House Children's Park and ended in the forecourt of gymnasium of MA Aziz Stadium.
The function was attended by ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury, MP, commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Shafiqul Islam, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Mesbah Uddin, Superintendent of Police AKM Hafiz Akhtar, among others.
