Thursday, 11 October 2007

NEW YORK, Oct 10 (UNB): Bangladesh has called upon the United Nations (UN) to renew international efforts to facilitate the free movement of labourers and creation of large-scale overseas employment opportunities for the citizens of developing countries, particularly least developed countries (LDCs).
Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN Ismat Jahan made the appeal while speaking at a debate on "Social Development" in the Third (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural) Committee of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Tuesday.
She also urged special focus on the situation of informal women workers who are most vulnerable. She said that policies should aim at equitable distribution of economic growth and ensuring job security.
Ambassador Ismat Jahan said Bangladesh remains committed to making progress in all spheres of social development in line with the Copenhagen objectives and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Third Committee will continue debate on social and human rights issues throughout the current month.
