BRAHMANBARIA, Oct 19: Unauthorised sawmills are mushrooming in the district leading to an environmental hazard, sources said.
According to the sawmill control ordinance of 1998, setting up of sawmills is not allowed beyond municipality area. But the mills are being operated in the district violating the existing rules.
A sawmill is not allowed within 10 kilometres of a border area, a forest or a waterway. Licence issued for a sawmill is valid for one year only and should be renewed every year.
Sawmill owners are required to submit accounts of sales and purchase of wood to the concerned government agency, according to the rules.
One may be sentenced to three years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000 for violating the rules.
The general public of the district have urged the government to take necessary action against unscrupulous businessmen who are operating saw mills in an unauthorised manner.
