UNB emerge group champs to reach quarterfinals

UNB news agency reached the quarterfinals of the Meril Media Cup Football tournament as group champions with all-win record beating former champions Jugantor by 1-0 goal Saturday, reports UNB.
Mohammad Russell scored the match-winner for UNB in the 7th minute and was adjudged Man of the Match played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in the city Saturday.
UNB, which beat Channel i by 2-0 goals in their first Group E match Friday, will play the quarterfinal Monday at 10:00 am against Group G champions.
In the day's another match, Iqbal Hossain Chapal made a hattrick guiding Inqilab to an emphatic 4-1 goals victory over Banglabazar Patrika in group match at the same venue.
Chapal scored all the four goals to notch the tournament's first hat-trick and also emerged as the top scorer in the meet. Babul Akhter netted the consolation goal for Banglabazar Patrika.
In the day's four other matches, Naya Diganta beat New Nation 1-0, Independent outplayed Sangram 3-0, Manabzamin defeated Karotoa 1-0, and New Age beat Financial Express 2-0.
Shafiuddin Bitu scored the lone goal for Naya Diganta, Javed struck twice and Arif netted one for the Independent, Abu Bakr Siddique scored for Manabzamin, while Sanaul Haque and Biplob scored for New Age.
In the day's remaining matches, Daily Star split points with Ittefaq and Jai Jai Din shared points with Bhorer Kagoj in goalless affairs at the same venue in the morning.
Former national player and current national coach M Abu Yousuf acted as match adjudicator on the day.
Deputy Editor of Jugantor Saiful Alam, former national player Abdus Salam, BSJA President M Manjurul Haque, General Secretary Syed M Mamun, Tournament Committee Chairman Kamalur Rahman and Secretary Raihan Al Mughni were present on the occasion.
