Friday, 31 October 2008

Commerce and Education Adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman again struck a high note of optimism that uncertainty about the election has already been overcome and the government's overall responsibility presently is to hold the polls as per the declared timeframe, reports UNB.
"We've already passed out the stage of uncertainty long ago... now our main target is to hold the polls on December 18. We're moving towards that major target."
Dr Rahman made the comment while speaking to the journalists after a meeting with visiting UNTAD secretary-general Supachai Panitchpakdi at the Commerce Ministry office in the city Thursday.
The comment of the adviser to the caretaker government came at a time when leaders from two major political parties- BNP and Awami League- are expressing concerns over different issues and apprehending a kind of uncertainty because of the pending cases of court regarding delimitation of electoral constituencies.
Under the set timeline, the Election Commission is to declare schedule for the long-stalled national elections on November 2 (Sunday), but the delimitation dispute still hangs over the way.
Hossain Zillur urged the country's political parties and leaders to create a confidence in the people's mind so that after the election the country does not face any instability.
"We have created the confidence in the minds of the political leaders and their parties about the election... We have taken measures to address their concerns like ensuring security," he said.
"Now they have the responsibility to create confidence in the people and bring a qualitative change in politics."
The UNCTAD secretary general said he had discussion on the economic issues of the day.
He observed Bangladesh has made a lot of progress in its economic sector. But it has to diversify its export products.
