JHENAIDA, Jan 16: The underground cable installation work of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd (BTCL) came to a halt in Jhenaida as Roads and Highways (R&H) Department and Zilla Parishad claimed ownership of the road.
The tug-of-war between the department and the parishad is likely to delay the expansion work of the information network system.
According to BTCL, the network through Jhenaida-Magura, Jhenaida-Kushtia and Jhenaida-Jessore-Khulna highways started in October last year.
The contractor-a Korea-based company KT Corporation-appointed Only Information, a sub-contractor, for fast completion of the work.
The sub-contractor handed over the responsibility of the installation work to Bita Engineering and National Construction Company.
Sources said NCC undertook work on the Magura-Jhenaidah-Kushtia route and Beta Engineering the Magura-Jessore-Khulna route.
The sub-contractors said the local Zilla Parishad authorities in Jhenaida had barred them from continuing the work without paying the lease money for land.
They said the cable installation work in Jhenaidah-Magura portion was however completed.
The Chief Executive Officer of Jhenaida Zilla Parishad Abdul Halim Mollah had sent a letter to the project director of the BTCL authorities claiming ownership of 23 kilometre long road and demanded lease money on November 19 last.
On December 24, the BTCL authorities regretted to pay the money claimed by the Zilla Parishad.
The project director also asked the parishad to settle the matter with the R&H Department.
