Underworld active again
Friday, 17 April 2009
THE new government was widely welcomed by countrymen. The people expected needed relief. But now the disappointment, specially for businesses, is that once again the underworld is getting active.
The extortionists appear to have staged a full comeback to torment businesses just like in the past. Repeated pleadings with the police and RAB, give no relief. No action is taken against the extortionists. The business operators are obliged to satisfy the extortionists in fear of their lives and property. It translates into higher costs of the essentials for the consumers. The businessmen say that they have to consider the hidden costs of business. They charge the retailers what they have to pay to the extortionists. The retailers pass the burden on to consumers.
The highest level of the government needs to pay attention to the rising insecurity of businesses. An immediate and effective response is called for.
