UNDP to hand over ballot boxes to EC today

Tuesday, 28 October 2008

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will formally hand over imported translucent ballot boxes to the Election Commission (EC) today (Tuesday) for use in voting for the December 18 general election, reports UNB.
At the request of the EC, 240,000 ballot boxes of this latest brand were procured through the UN agency's project with Canadian funding worth Tk 450 million (45 crore) as part of massive preparations for the national elections in a changed context.
A UNDP official told the news agency that majority of the ballot boxes have already arrived here. "The transparent ballot boxes would help build confidence among the electorate and dispel any suspicion about ballot stuffing."
A handover ceremony will be held today at a city hotel where Canadian High Commissioner Robert McDougall and UN Resident Coordinator Renata Dessallien will jointly hand over a token ballot box to Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda.
