The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has pledged to strengthen partnership with Bangladeshi legislators and continue its support for the parliament, its country head said Monday.
Stefan Priesner, country director of the UNDP, said his UN agency is keen to take up a five-year programme this year to help sharpen skills of members of parliament (MPs), building on the success of the earlier project.
"I wish to express our commitment to supporting Parliament and we look forward to continuing our strong partnership through a new multi-year project from 2009 to 2014," Mr Priesner said after an orientation programme for parliamentarians.
"By providing technical and institutional support to Parliament, UNDP hopes to foster democratic values and practices, encourage diverse and gender-sensitive political representation within multi-partisan committee structures, and create opportunities for public input into the legislative and oversight functions of the Parliament", he added.
