UNESCO contributes to preserve national heritage

Eminent educationist Prof Anisuzzaman Monday said UNESCO was making a very valuable contribution to preserve national heritages of different countries, including Bangladesh, across the globe, reports BSS.
"UNESCO has been highlighting our national heritage through publishing books to help preserving those," he told the inaugural function of a two-day UNESCO Book Fair-2009 at the central Public Library in the city Monday.
National Association of UNESCO Clubs in Bangladesh in cooperation with UNESCO Dhaka office organised the fair.
Prof Anisuzzaman inaugurated the fair, in which UNESCO Representative in Bangladesh Malama Meleisea addressed the function as the chief guest while eminent journalist and chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury and director of Public Library Nur Hossain Talukder were the special guests.
Prof Dr Aminul of the Department of Philosophy of Dhaka University presided over the function while secretary general of National Association of UNESCO Clubs in Bangladesh Mahbubuddin Chowdhury gave the welcome address.
Referring to the role the 192-member of UN body, Malama Meleisea said UNESCO was working across the world to ensure freedom of expression, access to information of people through publishing a lot of books in different languages.
He said UNESCO was giving priority to project culture and heritage of different countries to the people of the whole world through publishing books in English and different languages.
Describing the event as very significant for inquisitive readers of Bangladesh, Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury said the book fair was displaying a good number of publications in various field of knowledge and it would help readers enrich themselves intellectually.
Mahbubuddin Chowdhury urged the UNESCO to preserve the historical speech of the Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 7, 1971 as a cultural tradition of mankind.
Prof Dr Aminul said: "We have to give more attention to build reading habit to make a peaceful world by achieving knowledge."
Nur Hossain Talukder underscored the need for taking such types of initiatives for increasing the numbers of readers.
Nearly four thousand books and 20 posters on different issues including science, culture, environment, women empowerment and rights, human rights, history and heritage are on display at the fair.
The book fair will remain open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm everyday for all.
