The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) is preparing a list of unfit vehicles on the road to raise revenue collection from the transport sector, officials said.
They said vehicles without fitness certificates are evading taxes as they are supposed to pay car tax at the time of obtaining fitness certificates from BRTA.
BRTA has also planned to issue fitness certificate to all commercially and privately-owned vehicles under Dhaka City Corporation at a single place on a specific date. The authority will enforce the measure after discussion with all the stakeholders and members of road transport authority.
Director (enforcement) of BRTA has been assigned to implement the measure that would raise collection of car tax and reduce hassle of car owners, said a senior government official.
The authority has taken the decision in a meeting recently following the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said.
The PM in a meeting on review of macro-economic situation had directed the relevant authority to take all-out steps to raise revenue collection and launch 'one stop service', he added.
BRTA has also decided to introduce one-stop serv -ice in Dhaka circle (North/South) office and other BRTA circle offices outside Dhaka, the official said.
The authority will write to all deputy commissioners (DC) across the country for launching the one-stop service, he said.
Officials said the BRTA has been trying to bring coordination among National Board of Revenue (NBR), banks and post offices to provide the much-desired one-stop service to the car owners.
The government has imposed a 'presumptive tax' on all private car owners in the current fiscal. Under the measure, all car owners have to pay car tax on the basis of engine capacity.
After introduction of the measure, the revenue board and BRTA have received a number of complaints about hassle and unusual delay in the payment of car tax.
In view of this, both the authorities held a number of meetings to simplify the procedure of car tax collection and issuance of fitness certificates.
The authority is conducting a study to handover the responsibility of car tax collection to General Post Office (GPO) from the next fiscal to ease car tax payment procedures.
