Monday, 7 June 2010

FE Report
UNIDO will further extend its technical and technological support for poverty reduction through development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and strengthen industrialisation.
Without value addition, infrastructural development, poverty can't be reduced, Dr Kandeh K Yumkella, director general of United Nations International Development Organisation (UNIDO) said.
"Only manufacturing products are not enough, value addition is a must," he said.
He said technical capacity to test and certify products of internationally recognised standard are needed to expand market.
He was speaking while jointly inaugurating National Metrology Laboratory (NML) with Industries Minister Dilip Barua at Bangladesh Standards and Testing Instit-ution (BSTI) in the city Sunday.
The NML-first national laboratory-- is funded by European Union, NORAD, Bangladesh government and implemented by UNIDO.
The establishment of the state-of-the art NML has been a vital part of UNIDO's effort to contribute to growth and poverty reduction in the country through developing, strengthening and diversifying the country's production and export, he said.
The global recession recovery is being possible because of the Asian economy as they produce higher value added products, the UNIDO DG said.
"Bangladesh has earned international recognition and so European Union declared aid worth 16.5 million euro for Better Work and Standards Project (BEST) for the next five years," he said.
