The BNP has warned the government of ‘unimaginable consequences’ if it tries to arrest party chairperson Khaleda Zia. Addressing a programme in the city senior leaders of BNP alleged that ‘the Prime Minister in a meeting of Bangladesh Awami League recently had said that the BNP chief would be detained if there was any trouble (in the country)’. ‘If (the prime minister) tried to abuse the power of judiciary and threatens to detain Khaleda Zia, then let us clearly state that any such act will have unimaginable consequences,’ they warned. They also alleged that the government is arresting the leaders and the activists of the BNP and its affiliated bodies, including the JCD, one after another. ‘Arrests of opponent parties’ leaders and torture on them won’t help stop movement. This is people’s movement,’ they said. ‘The government is killing its opponents after making them the victims of enforced disappearances with the aim to clinging on to power,’ they claimed, adding people will give befitting reply to the government by dislodging it through a vigorous movement, according to a news agency.
