Union Parishad to be made centre of development: Nanak

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Devel-opment and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak said Saturday that the government would turn the Union Parishads (UP) into key centres of development to expedite economic progress of the country with stable democracy and balanced development, reports UNB.
He said the Union Parishads across the country would be made modern with internet connectivity to ensure direct and instant communication with the concerned ministries and other agencies.
"The 4Fs -- Function, Functionary, Fund and Freedom -- will be ensured countrywide through the Union Parishads to see the desired progress of rural Bangladesh," Nanak said at a national seminar in the city.
The seminar on 'Strengthening Local Resource Mobilization: The Role of Union Parishads and Municipalities' was held at Hotel Sheraton.
Bangladesh Union Parish-ad Forum (BUPF) and Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB) jointly organised the seminar, moderated by Muhammad Jahangir, a noted media personality. Former member of Local Government Commission Tofail Ahmed presented a keynote paper at the seminar.
Addressing the seminar as chief guest, Nanak said allowances of Union Parishad chairmen and members would be increased and additional manpower appointed in the UPs across the country to make these local bodies truly functional.
"The process of increasing allowances, other facilities and engaging more manpower is under process and the government is quite sincere about it," he said.
Nanak said villages are the roots and none can avoid villages while making development plans for the country. "So, we want to see the UPs as mini parliament of development."
He urged the UP chairmen and members to come forward to implement government's 'one-house one-farm' programme to ensure economic solvency of the rural people.
Responding to the participants, Nanak mentioned that the government would soon arrange a national conference in Dhaka for members of the UPs and Municipalities where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will interact with them.
