Unique day for birdwatching at JU

JU CORRESPONDENT | Saturday, 20 January 2024

Jahangirnagar University (JU) hosted the 22nd annual bird fair on the beautiful nature-themed campus on Friday, aimed at sensitising people to the importance of bird conservancy.
The university dressed the part with a series of activities, undertaken by zoology department, for bird-lovers and ornithologists all day.
The day featured activities like bird-drawing contest for children, quiz, poster exhibition, birdwatching, bird identification and informative bird talks.
A discussion was held outside the Zahir Raihan Auditorium from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm on Friday.
It addressed concerns about the dwindling presence of birds on the campus over the past few years.
Zoology professor Md Kamrul Hasan, convener of the fair, said: "Increased footprint along the reservoir's banks has disturbed birds, leading to a decrease in their interest to inhabit the area."
Pro-VC (academic) Prof Dr Mohammed Mostafa Feeroz said, "Wildlife Rescue Centre now serves as a refuge for birds, thanks to its suitable environment, with public entry prohibited as external visitors cause disturbances."
"The university aims to create a bird-friendly environment in all water bodies on the campus," he added.
In his opening address as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Nurul Alam said, "JU is actively working towards preserving an environment conducive for different types of birds."
Birdwatching has been restricted with intent to safeguard the natural and educational ambiance of the campus. Yet, JU witnesses a significant influx of visitors and ornithologists on holidays.
"If it's possible to prevent crowding and to adhere to the rules, bird sanctuaries can be guaranteed," the VC observed.
Pro-VC (admin) Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq along with bird researcher Inam Al Haque, Abdul Mukit Majumder Babu, chairman of Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, Md Amir Hosain Chowdhury, chief conservator of forests, and Prof Dr Mohammad Monirul Hasan Khan, chairman of Zoology Department, also spoke.
The bird fair recognises achievements in the Big Bird competition, outstanding bird reports in the media, and awards for bird research reports.
The inaugural bird fair was initiated by the 'Bangladesh Bird Club' in 2000, with direct involvement of the zoology department since 2004.
