United Airways (BD) Ltd, the country's youngest private airline, made its maiden flight to Dhaka - Kuala Lumpur - Dhaka route Monday with a 155-seated MD 83 aircraft.
Civil Aviation and Tourism secretary Shafiq Alam Mehedi formally inaugurated the flight as the chief guest in presence of Malaysian High Commissioner to Dhaka Jamaluddin Sabeh, who was the special guest.
Focusing Bangladeshi tourists and migrant workers as potential passengers, two-way airfare for this new route has been fixed at Tk 22,087, while it is Tk 13,751 for one-way (including all taxes).
"Initially we will operate twice a week - Monday and Friday - on Dhaka - KL route," said United Airways founder chairman and MD Capt Tasbirul Ahmed Choudhury. He also vowed his determination to upgrade the flight frequency by daily in coming days.
He said the commercial passenger carrier, funded by non-resident Bangladeshis, has two 155-seated MD-83 aircraft along with two other 37-seated Dash-8-100 aircraft.
"We are also planning to procure Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft by mid-2010," he added.
