CHITTAGONG, Apr 11: Unloading of imported goods from mother vessels at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port is being delayed for crisis of lighter vessels.
As the water Transport Co-ordination Cell (WTCC) is not able to provide lighter vessels as per need, each vessel is compelled to stay for a long time causing huge financial losses to mother vessels, concerned sources said.
WTCC sources said, different companies have detained goods-laden vessels for a long period that created such a crisis and it has rather become difficult to allot the vessel as per desired requirement.
Ultimately, the mother vessels are to incur tremendous losses on the one hand and the expenditures on importing the goods are also on a rise, on the other.
As many as 726 vessels are lying under the disposal of WTCC of whom a good number of vessels are not fit for run across the year.
Sources further said, a section of importers prefer to preserve the goods in the vessels instead of unloading the same. They resort to this evil practice to create artificial crisis of goods and earn profit illegally.
