UNO foils early marriage

GAIBANDHA, Sept 27 (BSS): Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sadullapur Upazila in co-operation with local UP chairman and the police foiled an attempt to solemnize an early marriage of a girl and a boy at village Damodarpur under Damodarpur Union of the upazila in the district on September 26.
The marriage of Farida Khatun (13), daughter of Fazal Prodhan of the village and a student of class seven, was fixed with Biplob Rahman (16), son of Anisur Rahman of neighbouring village Sandiapur of the upazila and all preparations were taken to complete the ceremony.
Being informed, UNO Abdul Wahed with UP Chairman Saidur Rahman Munshi and a team of police rushed to the spot and stopped the marriage of the minor girl and boy to save their future.
Later, the UNO successfully convinced the parents of the bride and the bridegroom to refrain from such hazardous marriage of their children.
He also briefed them on the bad effects of child marriage.
The local people became very happy for the initiative taken by UNO, UP chairman and the thana police in saving the girl and the boy from the curse of early marriage.
